How to Fix Stunted Hair Growth?

6 min read
By Sarita Sanke, MD | Dermatology

Stunted hair growth can be a frustrating and discouraging problem. The good news is you have the power to fix it.

how to fix stunted hair growth

Whether your hair growth has slowed due to damage, lifestyle factors, or genetics, there are steps you can take to boost hair growth and unlock the luscious hair you desire.

This article will look into ways to stimulate hair growth so you can get on the path to healthy, long locks.

Ways to Fix Stunted Hair Growth

Here are some pharmacological (medicine-based) and nonpharmacological ways of fixing stunted hair growth.

A. Home Remedies

1. Scalp massage

Researchers have concluded that a daily 4-min scalp massage for 24 weeks can make hair thick. In fact, when the skin under the scalp was observed following the massage, it was found that massaging causes the genes linked to hair growth to become more active and genes related to hair loss become less active. (1)

Experts have also confirmed that massaging the scalp increases the blood flow to the scalp, which means improved nutrition and oxygen supply to the hair follicles, enabling better hair growth.

These findings suggest that regular scalp massages might help people with hair thinning issues or stunted hair growth.

2. Rosemary oil

Rosemary oil, extracted from Rosmarinus officinalis, has demonstrated potential to improve hair regrowth and treat hair loss. It works by inhibiting an enzyme called testosterone 5α-reductase, which plays a role in hair loss. (2)

In clinical trials on patients with androgenetic alopecia, rosemary oil showed promise and performed similarly to minoxidil 2%, a common hair loss treatment.

This study result suggests that rosemary oil massage could be a natural and effective option for addressing hair loss and promoting regrowth. (3)

3. Rice water

In the past, Japanese women used a rice water rinse for hair care, and this practice had a positive impact. So, researchers looked into how rice water could benefit hair health.

Interestingly, they found that certain extracts from rice water offered very significant advantages for hair, improving its growth and appearance. (4)

Another study highlighted that rice water and its extracts could be valuable for maintaining healthy hair and thus are used in the development of hair care products to address issues such as hair loss and stunted hair growth. (5)

4. Coconut oil

Coconut oil, sourced from the Cocus nucifera fruit, is a well-loved remedy for stunted hair growth, particularly in South India.

This natural oil is packed with essential medium-chain fatty acids, including myristic acid, capric acid, and lauric acid, as well as helpful elements such as monolaurin and antioxidants such as tocopherol.

Coconut oil acts as an emollient, keeping the hair moisturized, aids in detangling, and prevents protein loss.

Globally, coconut oil hair massage is a favored solution for promoting healthy hair and growth. (6)

5. Peppermint oil

Peppermint oil, derived from the Mentha piperita plant, has shown promise in boosting hair growth.

In a study involving mice, peppermint oil was compared to other prominent substances such as minoxidil.

Results showed that the group that was given peppermint oil experienced significant hair growth, with increased follicle numbers and depth, as well as enhanced enzyme activity and gene expression related to hair growth. (7)

Mixing peppermint oil with a carrier oil for a hair massage might just work for fixing stunted hair growth.

B. Pharmacological Treatments

1. Minoxidil

Minoxidil, in its topical form (foam or solution), is an FDA-approved solution to combat hair loss for both men and women. Its mode of action involves enhancing blood flow to hair follicles, reducing inflammation, and promoting hair growth.

Only a small amount is absorbed when applied to the scalp, and the hair follicles convert it into its active form.

Studies suggest its effectiveness, with the 2% solution often showing the best results after the first year. The 5% solution and foam versions are also good alternatives. (8)

Note: Before taking any medicine, discuss your options with a healthcare professional.

2. Finasteride

Finasteride, a medication to combat male-pattern hair loss, has shown remarkable results. By blocking the hormone DHT, it promotes hair growth and halts further hair loss.

Studies involving almost 2,000 men revealed that 1 mg of daily finasteride leads to impressive outcomes. In just 1 year, improvements in hair count are noticeable, and they continue into the second year. (9)

In particular, 66% of the men saw enhanced hair growth compared to only 7% of those on a placebo.

While side effects were mild and mainly resembled placebo effects, a small percentage experienced sexual function issues, which usually resolved upon discontinuation. (9)

Note: Pregnant women should avoid finasteride due to its potential risks to the male fetus.

Final Word

Dealing with stunted hair growth? There’s hope!

You can boost hair growth using nonpharmacological approaches such as a scalp massage, rosemary oil, rice water, coconut oil, and peppermint oil.

Additionally, pharmacological treatments such as minoxidil, an FDA-approved topical solution, enhance blood flow to hair follicles and promote growth. Finasteride, a medication that combats male-pattern hair loss, can also be effective but should be used with caution.
