Pros of Wetting Hair Everyday

Wetting your hair daily offers several advantages-

  1. Firstly, it helps maintain hair hydration, which is especially beneficial for those with curly or wavy hair, as these hair types tend to be naturally drier. Daily moisture can prevent frizz and make hair more manageable in such hair types.
  2. Secondly, it allows for easy restyling of wet hair without using heat styling tools, which can be damaging.
  3. Additionally, daily wetting promotes scalp health by removing excess oils, dirt, and product buildup which helps reduce scalp issues like flaking, itching, and dryness. (1)

Note: But hair should be wet and treated with gentle and well-formulated cleansing shampoos only for daily cleansing. (2) Research has shown a shampoo with pH under 5.5 is good for daily wash. (3)

A study showed that washing hair 5-6 times a week resulted in overall satisfaction in terms of hair and scalp condition. Increased washing reduces oxidative stress and prevents harmful and irritating substances from accumulating on the scalp.

Researchers concluded that daily washing routines outperformed weekly cleansing without causing any harm to the hair. (1)

In moderation, daily hair wetting can leave you feeling refreshed and your hair looking its best.

Cons of Wetting Hair Everyday

Wetting your hair daily has its downsides, as per experts-

  1. It can lead to overhydration, causing hair to become excessively porous and prone to damage.
  2. Daily moisture can strip away natural oils, leaving hair dry and frizzy.
  3. Constant wetting may also require extra time for drying and styling, possibly leading to heat damage.
  4. Plus, it can increase the risk of dandruff or scalp issues.
  5. Using hair care products daily can be costly, and it may cause color-treated hair to fade faster.

A study suggests that frequent washing with shampoo can reduce hair cortisol content, a stress-related hormone, by leaching it from the hair shaft. The more you wash your hair, the less cortisol remains. (4)

Water exposure, rather than the shampoo itself, seems to be the primary cause. This means that wetting hair without shampooing can be a pretty bad idea. (4)

Should You Wet Your Hair Every Day or Not?

As per experts, wetting your hair daily isn’t necessary for most people and can lead to dryness and damage by removing natural oils. Washing your hair 2-3 times a week strikes a good balance for cleanliness and hair health.

However, if you have particularly oily hair or an active lifestyle, rinsing with water alone can help remove sweat and excess oil without over-washing.

In short, it’s not about the frequency of wetting but what your hair needs and also the care you provide for your hair after and during the wetting process.
