Biotin and Weight

Biotin is important for many physiological functions as it forms an essential part of many enzymes involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates. (3) This boost in metabolism means carbohydrate is used more effectively to produce energy and is less likely to be stored in the form of fat.

Studies have also found biotin to have an influential role in decreasing triglyceride levels and total cholesterol in the liver and blood. (3)(4)

Biotin and Its Role in Health

Biotin deficiency often manifests in the form of weak and brittle nails, loss of hair, and poor skin health. (1) For this reason, biotin supplementation is often prescribed for hair loss and weakening nails.

Some studies have also reported biotin to be useful for hair and nail changes caused by biotin deficiency as a result of an underlying pathological condition such as inherited deficiencies, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, or long-term antibiotic use. (5)
