In this article:
Your consciousness is made up of the soul and ego. The ego acts out of fear, while the soul acts out of honesty in the form of non-attachment. The ego attaches the mind to personal and external judgments, whereas the soul does not judge past or future scenarios.
When balanced, the soul guides the ego. Subsequently, the ego gives your soul the confidence to act on its desires in a righteous way. However, when imbalanced, the ego can be self-sabotaging and delusional and can even play tricks on the soul and its behaviors.
Each soul has a unique way of protecting itself through life, and if you want to understand its true desires, you must pull back each layer of your ego to identify your raw being or consciousness.
Signs of a Disconnect With the Soul
As mentioned, the body will signal the mind that there is a disconnect. This is your soul’s way of asking for help.
Sometimes, your ego takes control and silences these signals, so it can be a while before your mind realizes to listen. Be patient with yourself; this is normal. The signs, especially if unnoticed for a while, will present in the form of stress, anxiety, depression, and disease.
Stomach ulcers are a good example of this, so is dehydration. These are signs that your adrenal glands are rapidly firing signals of stress. Your soul is stressed. Listen and let the soul know you are listening by setting aside time for just you and yourself.
Soul, Ego, and Cognitive-Behavior Therapy
Different cultures, religions, and philosophies view the soul differently, explaining different aspects of it and the role it plays in the life cycle. To find a connection with your inner soul, you must keep being persistent in self-awareness, accountability, and taking time to listen to the soul’s desire.
When the mind listens to the ego instead of the soul, a mind-body disconnect occurs. The soul communicates through the body, while the ego communicates through poor habits or behaviors. That is why when there is an ego-based decision, your soul disagrees with, your body will usually respond in the form of stress or anxiety.
Cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) is a phenomenal resource and approach for anxiety and depression because it focuses on conditioned behaviors and how to “hack” them to become healthy behaviors. (1) It does not focus on the past experiences that got you to a particular state.
Eventually, with this approach, your mind recreates new confidence that outweighs stale confidence linked to the past or the ego. The soul takes control and recreates new, more fulfilling experiences. This control of the soul will be an indicator that you can control the mind. It will prove to your ego that it can trust the soul to take it from here and not to intervene in the future.
Meditate to Help Rejuvenate the Soul
Meditation is very helpful in rejuvenating the soul. Meditation has many forms, too: guided meditation, transcendental meditation, and non-guided meditation. Even video gaming or photography can be a form of meditation.
Anything that allows the mind to be present and not judge thoughts, but acknowledges them, is a form of meditation. (2) However, meditation is not for everyone and can be agonizing for some. If this is the case for you, then begin exploring your soul with other methods, such as cleaning out an old closet or drawer, exercising, painting, planting, and cooking.
Anything that lets tells the mind, “Hey, I am setting up a special time for you and me to connect” is the first step for the mind and body to realize you are listening. The magic starts there, in that allocated time.
Dietary Tips for the Inner Soul
Each gut is different, based on a person’s DNA and life experiences. There will never be one diet designed for all people or the soul. However, I find a diet that is clean, not processed, and plant-based to be the most beneficial.
My advice is to become familiar with what fuels the brain cells, such as fatty acids, and what fuels the digestive tract, which is usually water.
Keeping the diet simple, eating the rainbow, and indulging in fruits and vegetables is always the safest bet. However, you have to make sure you are not malnourished. You should be receiving enough carbs and protein as well.
If you would like to learn more about proper diets for your body, I highly suggest researching Ayurvedic medicine or consulting an Ayurvedic doctor.
Is a Teacher Required to Guide Through the Process of Soul Searching?
No, it is up to the student to figure out what works best for them while soul searching. The teacher is required to provide knowledge, facts, resources, and disciplines as a framework to manage life and its challenges.
However, the teacher must be connected with their own soul and put in diligent work before leading by example effectively. This is a common issue in westernized cultures, as this step is generally skipped.
If you are seeking guidance from a teacher who seems to not have their own emotions, experiences, or life stable, then I would recommend reconsidering a new guide. Otherwise, it is like the blind leading the blind.
Inner Soul and Spirituality
Searching the inner soul and getting in touch with the spiritual side may be the same thing for some. However, it may be different for others, depending on whether religion plays a big part in a person’s life.
However, you do not need to explore spirituality if you only want to explore the soul.
If this is the case, I always suggest for people to think in terms of frequency, much like Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla, to understand the cycle of life with facts rather than spirituality. For some, this approach brings a lot of reassurance. It’s science, baby!
Final Word
The ego and soul are two separate personalities living inside of you. The ego is like a bully that keeps messing with you until your soul feels connected and strong enough to stand up on its own and take its control back.
Therefore, it is vital to strike a balance between the ego and soul. Practicing meditation, cognitive behavioral therapy, and clean eating are some ways that can help build a connection with your soul.
