However, there is a reported side effect of increased hair shedding in some cases during treatment. In a case series, 7% of patients experienced this adverse event.

Whether this side effect is relatively common or uncommon is hard to say due to the lack of proper studies and research, which is why its long-term safety profile and effect on hair loss, especially in adults, remain uncertain. (2)

The Link Between Tranexamic Acid and Hair Loss

Tranexamic acid is a medication commonly used to treat or manage excessive bleeding, mainly during surgeries or in conditions such as heavy menstrual flow. It works by preventing the breakdown of blood clots. (1)(2)

Hair loss, on the other hand, occurs due to hormonal changes, genetic factors, infections, and other factors.

While many medications cause hair loss as an unintended side effect, the association between tranexamic acid and hair loss has not been extensively studied or documented in scientific literature.

However, a lot of users have reported hair loss and shedding to be side effects of this drug. Even some experts agree on the potential of hair loss in people who take tranexamic acid.

Although no study directly confirms the relationship between tranexamic acid and hair loss, a study on animal models did verify the connection between hair health and tranexamic acid.

According to researchers, mice lacking a certain gene developed white fur over time, but when these mice were given tranexamic acid, their white fur turned brown. This result suggested that this drug has a potential effect on hair health such as on hair color. (3)

In short, there may be some chance of hair loss when taking tranexamic acid, but it is not one of the most common or widely observed side effects of this drug.

What Is Tranexamic Acid Used For?

Tranexamic acid is a medication used to prevent or reduce excessive bleeding. It is commonly employed in surgical procedures, trauma cases, and accidents to control hemorrhage.

Additionally, it is prescribed for women with heavy menstrual bleeding, individuals with hereditary bleeding disorders, and those undergoing dental surgeries.

The drug is also used in obstetrics for postpartum hemorrhage and in cases of recurrent nosebleeds. (4)

What Are the Potential Side Effects of Tranexamic Acid?

Tranexamic acid, a medication to control bleeding, may cause mild side effects such as nausea and headaches. Uncommonly, it can lead to allergic reactions, muscle pain, and visual disturbances.

There’s a rare risk of blood clots, especially in those with a history of clotting disorders. In some cases, seizures have been reported, particularly in individuals with a seizure history. (4)

Should You Be Concerned About Hair Loss if Prescribed Tranexamic Acid?

Final Word

Tranexamic acid, primarily prescribed for heavy bleeding, has off-label use for skin conditions, with reported success.

However, hair shedding is a reported side effect in 7% of cases, but its prevalence is unclear. Some users and experts suggest a potential link between tranexamic acid and hair loss. While not common, there’s a chance of hair loss with its use.
