Buttermilk is a dairy-based beverage often produced as a by-product of butter production. It is chiefly the thick liquid that is leftover after whole milk is churned into butter. (1)

What you need:

  • 3 tbsp buttermilk
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sweet almond oil
  • 2–3 drops of rose water

How to use:

  1. Mix 3 tbsp buttermilk, 1 tsp olive oil, and 1 tsp almond oil.
  2. To the mixture, add rose water and mix well.
  3. Dip a cotton ball or pad in the mixture and apply the liquid to your face.
  4. Leave it on for about 15 minutes, allowing your skin to soak the mixture before washing it off.

2. To reduce suntan

Buttermilk, being a dairy-based product, is rich in lactic acid, which is a natural exfoliator and thus promotes skin cell turnover. As a result, the upper, damaged layer of skin is shed off, revealing new, healthy, even-toned skin.

Buttermilk can be used efficiently with aloe vera for its soothing and hydrating properties.

What you need:

  • 4 tbsp buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp rose water
  • 1 tbsp raw organic honey
  • 2 tbsp aloe vera gel

How to use:

  1. Add the buttermilk, honey, and fresh aloe vera gel to a blender and blend them well until a smooth paste is obtained.
  2. Add the rose water to the mixture.
  3. Use the paste to massage your neck and face for a few minutes.
  4. Rinse your face after 15–20 minutes of application.

  1. Mix the buttermilk, gram flour, and cucumber juice in a clean bowl to form a smooth, thick paste.
  2. To the paste, add turmeric powder.
  3. Using a brush, apply the paste to your face.
  4. Wash it off after 15 minutes using water.

  • 2 tbsp buttermilk
  • 1 banana, mashed
  • 1 tbsp raw organic honey

  1. Mash one small banana.
  2. Blend the banana, buttermilk, and honey in a mixer.
  3. Apply the resultant paste to your neck and face.
  4. Allow the mixture to dry completely before washing it off using a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water.

  • 1 tsp onion seeds

  • 1 tbsp bhringraj powder (5)
  • 1 tbsp brahmi powder
  • 2–3 dry leaves of shikakai (6)
  • 6–8 dry amla (7)

How to use:

  1. Pour the buttermilk into a clay pot and add the other ingredients to it.
  2. Leave the mixture overnight.
  3. Blend the mixture and strain it.
  4. Apply the paste to your hair, covering the length of your hair, including the roots.
  5. Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave it on for 30–40 minutes.
  6. Wash your hair using a mild shampoo.
  7. Repeat the remedy two times a week.

2. To condition the hair

  • 200 ml buttermilk
  • 1 bowl boiled rice
  • 1 vitamin E capsule

How to use:

  1. Blend the boiled rice to form a smooth paste.
  2. Add buttermilk and the contents of a vitamin E capsule to the rice paste and mix them well.
  3. Apply the hair mask to your dry hair.
  4. Wash your hair after 30 minutes to 1 hour of application.
  5. Shampoo your hair as usual.
