Omer Shahab, MD

Dr. Omer Shahab is a physician trained in internal medicine, gastroenterology, hepatology, and nutrition.

Dr. Shahab obtained his bachelor’s degrees in cognitive science and psychology from the University of Virginia and received his medical degree from the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine of Florida International University in Miami, FL. He did training in internal medicine at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA, followed by a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at Virginia Commonwealth University Health in Richmond, VA.

Dr. Shahab has experience in digital health and artificial intelligence in medicine. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology Innovation and Technology Committee. He has served in advisory, consultant, and clinical affairs positions at digital health and endoscopic device companies.

Dr. Shahab has published peer-reviewed journal articles in the areas of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, primary biliary cholangitis, machine learning and omics in inflammatory bowel disease, gastric intestinal metaplasia, and hepatitis C. He has also given oral presentations at national and international conferences, including the Digestive Disease Week and the Liver Meeting.

Dr. Shahab’s areas of interest include irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, gut-brain axis, and endoscopy. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending his free time with family, as well as playing and watching basketball.
